Mama Never Told Me, by Emily Van Do, is a cute, funny mostly pictures book about the crazy things strangers (and not-so-strangers) say to pregnant women.
I could relate to many of them because I was one of those huge, basketball-belly preggos that people can’t help but exclaim inappropriate things to. Most notably, on my way into the Hollywood CVS near our apartment in LA one day a 70-ish year old guy yelled in my general direction: “Are you having a baby whale?”
As it turned out, I was. My son was 9lbs 5oz at birth and we ended up naming him Whalen. So, cheers, Old Guy! You were right!
The book is more like an extended greeting card of jokes but it’ll be a welcome addition to any pregnant woman’s life at the end of her pregnancy when she’s already cut her fingernails twice that day and watched the fourth season of Mad Men again hoping it will magically turn into the fifth.
